Beskid pellets from OBI vs Beskidy pellets from Tartak Kocoń — are they the same?

In a search box, "pellet Beskid" and "pellet Beskidy" look like a typo of the same thing. In the shops they are two different entries: a bag of "Pellet drzewny Beskid A1 15 kg" at OBI, and a pallet of "Pellet Beskidy" from the Kocoń sawmill at fuel distributors. The parameters are almost identical, but OBI's page names no producer — so we cannot honestly write that they are the same pellets. Below is everything the sources allow us to say about both.

Beskid at OBI — what the product page says

We have tracked this offer since July 2026; it is one of two DIY-chain bags in our table (the other is Rezult from Castorama). OBI's page declares:

• class A1 (in the product name);
• calorific value 17.8 MJ/kg (≈ 4.94 kWh/kg);
• moisture 10%;
• ash 0.70%;
• wood species: "mixed wood";
• 15 kg bag.

What the page does not give: the producer's name, a certificate number, the diameter. Two of the numbers — 10% moisture and 0.70% ash — are exactly the upper limits of class A1, not test results; the shop copied the standard's limits. Nothing wrong with that, but it is worth knowing it's not information about a specific batch.

The last price we recorded was 37.99 zł per bag, i.e. 2,533 zł/t — the maths: 37.99 ÷ 15 × 1000. OBI regularly shows this product as unavailable online with in-store pickup; for selected OBI stores we offer a back-in-stock alert.

Beskidy from the Kocoń sawmill — what distributors say

Pellet Beskidy is made by PPUH "Kocoń" Sp.j. (K. Kocoń, J. Kocoń) — a sawmill operating since 2001 in the Żywiec Beskids, which besides pellets trades in round timber, pallet boards and biomass, sourced "mainly from pine, fir and spruce". Distributors (PelletSklep, Kaskada Opał) state:

• certificate ENplus A1 no. PL 081 (downloadable from the distributor);
• raw material: "clean, dry softwood sawdust, free of bark";
• diameter 6 mm ± 1 mm, length 3.15–40 mm;
• moisture ≤ 10%, ash ≤ 0.7%, calorific value > 17.8 MJ/kg;
• pallet 65 bags × 15 kg = 975 kg, at the time of writing 2,449 zł at PelletSklep (2,512 zł/t) — status "out of stock".

The same pellets?

Arguments for: an identical calorific value of 17.8 MJ/kg, identical moisture and ash limits, a name differing by one letter. Argument against: OBI writes "mixed wood", Kocoń writes "softwood sawdust". "Mixed" may mean "a mix of softwood species", but it may also mean a hardwood admixture.

We don't settle it. If you want to know what's in the OBI bag, look at the bag: the producer and certificate number should be on the label, and the number PL 081 can be checked in the ENplus register. If there is no number on the bag — that is more important information than any name.

A DIY-store bag or a distributor's pallet

With similar parameters, the arithmetic decides. At the time of writing: the OBI bag at 2,533 zł/t, the distributor's pallet at 2,512 zł/t — a token difference, but a coincidence of one day, not a rule. Usually DIY-store bags come out dearer by several hundred złoty per tonne; on the other hand you buy them without commitment, one at a time, and take them home at once.
